Stihl 2-Stroke Oil: HP vs HP Super vs HP Ultra (and the Right Mix Ratio)

If you run a Stihl chainsaw, trimmer, or blower, you have two questions: which Stihl 2-stroke oil to buy (HP, HP Super, or HP Ultra), and how much of it goes in the gas. The second one is easy. Every modern Stihl gasoline tool mixes at 50:1, which is 2.56 oz of oil per US gallon (20 ml per litre). The first one comes down to how you use the machine. The Stihl 2-stroke oil lineup
Stihl sells three tiers of two-stroke engine oil. All three mix at the same 50:1 ratio in Stihl equipment; the difference is the base oil and how cleanly it burns:

The ratio: 50:1, always
Stihl specifies 50:1 (50 parts gas to 1 part oil) for all of its gasoline-powered tools. Per US gallon of fresh 89+ octane gas, that’s 2.56 fluid ounces of oil; per litre it’s 20 ml.
Stihl’s bottle sizes are designed around this: the small 2.6 oz bottle treats one gallon, and the 6.4 oz bottle treats 2.5 gallons. If you’re mixing a different amount, or you found a part-full can in the garage, use the calculator:

Do you have to use Stihl oil?
No. Stihl equipment needs a quality 2-stroke oil rated for air-cooled engines, mixed at 50:1. The JASO FD standard is the one to look for on the bottle. Stihl’s own oils are formulated (and warrantied) for exactly that, but Husqvarna XP+, Echo Power Blend, and AMSOIL Saber are all safe substitutes in a pinch. Two things you should never substitute:
- Marine TC-W3 outboard oil, which is formulated for water-cooled engines that run much cooler than a chainsaw cylinder.
- Regular motor oil, which isn’t low-ash and will carbon up the exhaust port and foul the plug. More on that in 2-cycle vs 2-stroke.
Mixing itself is the part people get wrong far more often than brand choice: measure the oil, don’t eyeball it.
