Premix ratio is a tuning decision, not just a spec
On handheld equipment the ratio is whatever the decal says. On a two-stroke dirt bike it is a range the manual opens up and the rider narrows, typically 32:1 to 40:1 for trail and moto use, with some riders running 50:1 on a high-end synthetic and vintage or hard-revving race engines going as rich as 20:1.
The reason there is a range at all is that oil displaces fuel in the charge. More oil means slightly less fuel per unit volume, which leans the air-fuel mixture, which is why a meaningful change in premix ratio can call for a jetting check. Riders who change ratio and then chase a lean bog are usually chasing their own oil change.
Choose the oil before you argue about the ratio
A modern full-synthetic premix oil at 40:1 protects better than a cheap mineral oil at 32:1, because the film strength is doing the work, not the volume. For an air-cooled or liquid-cooled MX engine, look for a JASO FD rated oil or a dedicated racing premix oil formulated for high-rpm two-strokes.
What not to use is more important than what to use: never marine TC-W3 oil (formulated for water-cooled outboards running far cooler), and never four-stroke motor oil, which is not low-ash and will coke the exhaust port and power valve.
Power valves, plugs and what the mix leaves behind
The exhaust power valve is the part that tells you what your fuel habits have been. An over-oiled mix, a cheap oil, or a lot of low-rpm trail riding leaves carbon that gums the valve mechanism and blunts the powerband. It is a routine service item on a dirt bike and its condition is a direct readout of the mix.
Read the plug too. A tan-to-light-brown insulator is right; wet and black means too much oil or too rich a jetting; a clean white insulator with a glazed centre electrode is the lean condition to take seriously before it becomes a holed piston.
Fuel and storage for a bike that sits between rides
Mix what you will use in a day or two of riding. Pump premix that has sat for a month, especially with ethanol in it, is a common cause of a bike that ran fine in October and will not start in March. Mixed fuel left in a float bowl over winter is worse: drain the bowl before storage.
If you run race gas or ethanol-free fuel, it keeps better than pump gas but is not indefinite. Date the jug when you mix it.
