Modern 2-stroke outboards from Mercury, Yamaha, Tohatsu and Evinrude/Johnson run 50:1 with a TC-W3 marine oil. During break-in, or on older motors, 25:1 is common — check your engine's plate or manual.
Premix or oil injection: find out before you mix anything
Two-stroke outboards come in two forms. Premix motors take gas and oil mixed in the tank, which is where the ratio on this page applies. Oil-injection motors (Mercury and Yamaha systems of that type, and Evinrude/Johnson VRO) carry a separate oil reservoir and meter oil into the engine automatically, so their fuel tank takes straight gasoline.
Putting premix into an oil-injected motor double-oils it: heavy smoke, fouled plugs and carbon. Running an injection motor with the system failed or bypassed and no premix is the other direction, and it destroys the engine. If you are not certain which one you have, check the cowl for an oil reservoir and confirm in the manual before the first tank.
Marine oil is a different standard, not a different brand
An outboard is water-cooled, so its cylinder walls run far cooler than the air-cooled cylinder of a chainsaw, and the oil requirement is different. Outboards call for an NMMA TC-W3 certified oil, a marine standard covering lubricity, detergency, ring sticking, rust protection and gasoline miscibility for water-cooled two-strokes.
Air-cooled JASO FB, FC and FD oils are not interchangeable with TC-W3 for this reason. Using an air-cooled oil in an outboard is off-spec and can matter for a warranty claim, and using TC-W3 in an air-cooled saw is the mistake in the other direction.
Break-in and older motors run richer
Modern premix outboards are generally 50:1, but two situations call for more oil. Break-in schedules on new or rebuilt powerheads often double the oil for the first tanks, commonly 25:1. And motors from the 1960s and earlier were frequently specified at 24:1 or 25:1 in their own manuals.

Ethanol, water and the fuel system on a boat
Boats are the worst environment for ethanol-blended fuel. A vented tank in humid air lets water in, ethanol absorbs it, and past a threshold the fuel phase-separates: a water-and-ethanol layer settles at the bottom of the tank, right where the pickup sits. The engine then gets a slug of water with almost no oil in it.
The practical defences are the ones every marina repeats: use ethanol-free fuel where it is available, keep a water-separating fuel filter and change it on schedule, keep the tank full over storage to reduce condensation space, and use a marine fuel stabiliser. None of this is about the mix ratio, but on a boat it causes more engine failures than the ratio does.
