2-Stroke Mix Ratio Statistics: 61 Models (2026 Data)
Published October 24, 2026 · 8 min read
The headline figure is lopsided: 59 of 61 current 2-stroke models (97%) state a 50:1 gas-to-oil mix in their manufacturer’s own documentation, and every one of the 59 handheld and backpack machines from Stihl, Echo, Husqvarna and RedMax does. The only exceptions in the set are two dirt bikes. This page publishes that count, the tank sizes behind it and what they mean in oil per fill, plus the storage limits the same manufacturers print for mixed fuel. Data checked 2026-10-24; every row links to the page or manual it came from, and the whole set downloads as a CSV.
Key figures
- 61 models from 5 brands: 24 chainsaws, 15 string trimmers and brushcutters, 2 multi-tool powerheads, 6 handheld blowers, 12 backpack blowers, 2 dirt bikes.
- 59 of 61 state 50:1. The other 2 are the 2027 Yamaha YZ125 and YZ250, at 30:1.
- 33 of 61 ratios come from the model’s own page or manual; the other 28 rest on a brand-wide statement (all 23 Stihl rows, 5 Echo rows).
- 44 of 61 models have a published fuel tank size. Stihl lists tank capacity for its trimmers only.
- A median chainsaw tank (0.44 L, n = 15) holds 8.8 ml of oil at 50:1; a median backpack blower tank (2.1 L, n = 9) holds 42 ml.
Mix ratio by model
| Stated ratio | Models | Share |
|---|---|---|
| 50:1 | 59 | 96.7% |
| 30:1 | 2 | 3.3% |

What the 50:1 count does and does not say matters more than the count. It says that a buyer of a current saw, trimmer or blower from Stihl, Echo, Husqvarna or RedMax will be told 50:1. It does not say every 2-stroke engine runs 50:1: the set has no older equipment, no budget brands (no Poulan, Craftsman, Ryobi or Homelite page published a readable spec), no outboards and only two motorcycles. Those are exactly the places where 40:1 and 32:1 still live, which is why the 40:1 vs 50:1 guide exists.
Two manufacturer caveats sit inside the 50:1 rows. Husqvarna’s how-to-mix article recommends 50:1 “for Husqvarna products up to and including 75cc”; every Husqvarna engine in the set is under 75 cc. Echo’s current manuals say Echo-branded 2-stroke oil “may be mixed at 50:1 ratio for application in all ECHO engines sold in the past regardless of ratio specified in those manuals”, which confirms that older Echo manuals printed other ratios.
By machine type
| Machine | Models | At 50:1 | With tank size | Median tank | Tank range | Oil per full tank (median) | Full tanks per US gallon |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Chainsaws | 24 | 24 | 15 | 0.44 L (14.9 fl oz) | 0.24 to 0.74 L | 8.8 ml | 8.6 |
| String trimmers and brushcutters | 15 | 15 | 15 | 0.51 L (17.2 fl oz) | 0.3 to 1 L | 10.2 ml | 7.4 |
| Multi-tool powerheads | 2 | 2 | 0 | not published | |||
| Handheld blowers | 6 | 6 | 3 | 0.5 L (16.9 fl oz) | 0.5 to 0.55 L | 10 ml | 7.6 |
| Backpack blowers | 12 | 12 | 9 | 2.1 L (71 fl oz) | 1.25 to 2.48 L | 42 ml | 1.8 |
| Dirt bikes | 2 | 0 | 2 | 7 L (236.7 fl oz) | 7 to 7 L | 233.3 ml | 0.5 |
Oil per full tank is the tank volume divided by the model’s stated ratio. It is the number that explains why mixing in the machine’s tank goes wrong: a median saw needs 8.8 ml, so pouring 2 ml too much or too little turns 50:1 into 41:1 or 65:1. In a gallon can the same 2 ml error moves the ratio by less than one point. Mix in the can, and use the calculator or a ratio bottle for the amount.
The last column is how many full tanks one US gallon of mix fills. A trimmer owner who fills up once a week is still working through a gallon two months later, which collides with the storage limits further down. A backpack blower empties the same gallon in under two fills.
By brand
| Brand | Models | Stated ratio | Where the ratio comes from |
|---|---|---|---|
| Stihl | 23 | 50:1 | brand-wide statement |
| Echo | 16 | 50:1 | model pages, plus a brand-wide statement where no manual was linked |
| Husqvarna | 16 | 50:1 | each model's page or manual |
| RedMax | 4 | 50:1 | each model's page or manual |
| Yamaha | 2 | 30:1 | each model's page or manual |
Stihl is the brand where every ratio is brand-wide, because its product pages do not state a ratio and its US manual PDFs could not be downloaded for this check. Its US mixing guide says both “All STIHL gasoline-powered equipment uses a 50:1 gas and oil mixture” and, a few lines away, “Most STIHL gasoline-powered equipment runs on a 50:1 mixture”. The brand pages on this site go deeper: Stihl oil, Husqvarna oil, Echo oil.
How long mixed fuel keeps, by manufacturer
The same manufacturers publish storage limits, and they disagree more than they do on ratio. 14 published statements, quoted:
| Brand | Document or product | What it says |
|---|---|---|
| Stihl | STIHL USA fuel FAQ (pump gas mix) | "STIHL currently recommends that you do not store or use fuel older than 60 days, and preferably no longer than 30 days, even with a stabilizer." |
| Stihl | STIHL MotoMix premixed fuel (FAQ) | "STIHL MotoMix® contains no ethanol and has a storage life of up to two years. STIHL MotoMix® can be left in the machine during seasonal storage." |
| Stihl | STIHL USA 'How to mix oil and gas' guide | "It is recommended that you only mix sufficient fuel for a few days' work. Fuel storage should never exceed three months." |
| Stihl | STIHL USA extended storage tips | "Standard pump gasoline quickly deteriorates and should not be kept over 30 days in any season." |
| Echo | ECHO CS-4010 operator's manual (same wording in other current ECHO manuals) | "Do not mix more fuel than you expect to use in 30 days or 90 days when a fuel stabilizer is added." |
| Echo | ECHO Red Armor Fuel (premix 50:1) | "Stays stable 2 years after opening and up to 5 years unopened" |
| Echo | ECHO Red Armor 2-stroke oil | "Allow mixed fuel to remain stable up to 2 years in a properly-sealed container" |
| Echo | ECHO Red Armor Fuel Treatment | "Keep fuel fresh for up to 2 years in a properly-sealed container" |
| Husqvarna | Husqvarna 435/440 operator's manual | "Do not mix fuel for more than 1 month at a time." |
| Husqvarna | Husqvarna 'How to mix 2-stroke fuel' article | "Avoid storing mixed two-stroke fuel for more than one month. ... fuel stabilizers ... may extend the shelf life up to twelve months." |
| Husqvarna | Husqvarna 2-Stroke Pre-Mixed Fuel + Oil | "Easy starting with fuel that stays fresh for years." |
| TruFuel | TruFuel premix (FAQ) | "TRUFUEL is packaged in a sealed container that ensures high performance for a minimum of 2 years from the time you open the can and for more than 5 years unopened." |
| Sta-Bil (Gold Eagle) | STA-BIL Fuel Stabilizer | "Keeps fuel fresh for long term storage – up to 24 months" |
| Yamaha | YZ125 2027 owner's manual | "mix the oil and gas the day of the race. Do not use premix that is more than a few hours old." |
Read together: mix made from ethanol pump gas is a 30-day product by most of these sources, 60 to 90 days at the outside with a stabilizer, and Stihl contradicts itself between its fuel FAQ (60 days, preferably 30) and its mixing guide (three months). Sealed, ethanol-free canned premix is rated in years. Yamaha’s race manual is the strictest of all: mix on the day. The winterizing guide turns those limits into a storage routine.

Methodology
What was collected. For each model: brand, model, machine type, engine type (two-stroke, Stihl 4-MIX, or oil-injected), displacement, fuel tank capacity as published and converted to litres, the stated gas-to-oil ratio, whether that ratio is stated for the model or for the whole brand, and the URL of every source. Sources were manufacturer product pages and operator’s manuals only; no retailer listings, forums or dealer pages. Stihl displacement came from Stihl Australia, UK and Canada pages because stihlusa.com rounds it to 0.1 cubic inch. Data was read on 2026-10-24.
Which models. The current gas saws, trimmers, multi-tool powerheads and blowers that the four handheld brands list on their US sites (with non-US Stihl pages for specs), chosen from each brand’s homeowner to professional range, plus the 2027 Yamaha YZ125 and YZ250 owner’s manuals. Models no longer on the manufacturer’s site were dropped rather than filled from old listings.
Where two official sources conflict, the conflict is recorded in the row’s note in the CSV: the Echo SRM-2620 page lists a 20.6 fl oz tank against 0.56 L in its manual (the page figure is used), the Echo GT-225 manual gives three tank sizes by serial range (the page’s 12.8 fl oz is used), and Husqvarna’s 125B page shows 18.5 fl oz beside 0.5 L (the manual’s 0.5 L is used).
What was not measured. Nothing here was tested on an engine. The ratios are what manufacturers tell owners, not what engines need, and not what oil makers print on bottles. The set is not a market sample: it has no sales weighting, no older or used equipment, no budget brands, no outboards and no oil-injected engines, and Makita, Ryobi and Poulan Pro were excluded only because no readable manufacturer spec page was found. Tank capacity is missing for 17 models, almost all Stihl. Displacement and tank figures are as published and inherit any rounding in the source.

The figures are rebuilt from the dataset every time the site is built, so the tables, the CSV and the chart always match. If a manufacturer changes a spec or you find a row that disagrees with its source, the contact page reaches the editor, and the row will be corrected with a note. For turning any of these ratios into an amount for your can, the 2-stroke mix chart and the 50:1 page have the tables.
Common questions
[01] What percentage of 2-stroke equipment uses 50:1?
In this dataset, 59 of 61 current models (97%) state 50:1, and all 59 handheld and backpack machines from Stihl, Echo, Husqvarna and RedMax do. The two exceptions are the 2027 Yamaha YZ125 and YZ250 dirt bikes, whose owner's manuals state 30:1 with Yamalube 2-R.
[02] How much 2-stroke oil is in a full chainsaw tank?
At 50:1, a median chainsaw tank in this dataset (0.44 litres, n = 15 saws with a published tank size) holds 8.8 ml of oil. The smallest tank, the Echo CS-271T at 0.24 litres, holds 4.8 ml; the largest, the Husqvarna 572 XP at 0.74 litres, holds 14.8 ml.
[03] How long can mixed 2-stroke fuel be stored, according to manufacturers?
For fuel mixed from pump gas, the published limits run from 30 days (Echo without stabilizer, Husqvarna's one month, Stihl's preferred limit) to 60 days (Stihl USA's fuel FAQ) or 90 days with stabilizer (Echo). Sealed canned premix is rated far longer: Stihl MotoMix up to two years, Echo Red Armor Fuel two years opened and five unopened, TruFuel at least two years opened.
[04] Can I use this data?
Yes. The dataset, the CSV and the chart are published under CC BY 4.0: use them in articles, videos or tools with a link to this page as the credit. Each row carries the manufacturer URL it came from, so you can check any figure yourself.
